Forestry
Koata Ltd owns the following forest lands: Hira (4,700ha), McLaren Bay (520ha) and Elaine Bay (320ha). These forest lands are leased to Tasman Pine Forests Ltd (TPFL) who currently own all the trees, however, from July 2024 all new replants will be owned by Koata Ltd. Our valued forestry relationship with TPFL will continue through Forestry Right Agreements and a Management Agreement. The majority of trees harvested from Ngāti Koata whenua are processed locally at the Richmond based Nelson Pine Industries (NPI) factory. Both NPI and TPFL are owned by the global forestry company Sumitomo Forestry, Japan.

This investment class includes direct investment into land for schools leased to the Ministry of Education and other land leased to Government Departments (all within the rohe of Ngāti Koata); syndicated ownership of horticultural land, housing, commercial and industrial properties (across the motu); and direct co-investment into land for development and Ngāti Koata housing (all within the rohe of Ngāti Koata).
Fisheries and Aquaculture
Fisheries: along with 3 other Te Tauihu iwi, Koata Ltd leases its fisheries quota to two local fishing companies.
Aquaculture: involves water-space/lines in Golden Bay and Tasman Bay that have been consented for growing mussels. Along with 3 other Te Tauihu iwi, Koata Ltd leases some lines directly to a local company. Other water-space/lines are owned via the eight iwi Te Tauihu acquaculture collective, Maara Moana Group and are managed through various agreements with four local aquaculture related companies.
